The U.S. homeless population continues to rise at an alarming rate. The most recent numbers as of 2018 show that there are over 640,000 people that are homeless on any given night. Homeless encampments are popping up in both large cities and small urban communities. The problem is overwhelming most shelters and programs that offer assistance.

Our homeless population is quite diverse. While most people believe that many of our homeless find themselves here because of drugs and alcohol, the truth is actually quite different. The latest studies found on GreenDoors, org show that out of the 640,000 plus homeless population...:

238,110 of those people are in families
25% suffer from mental illness, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression
17% are considered chronically homeless
13% are fleeing domestic violence
12% are veterans

Certainly drugs and alcohol play a part in our homeless communities, but how many homeless people resort to mind-altering substances to escape their situation vs. how many are on the streets because of drugs and alcohol?

In any case, the numbers are alarming and there are no great answers to solve this epidemic. As cities are forced to deal with the trash, biohazards and drug paraphernalia, Steri-Clean is called in to assure these sites are cleaned and disinfected properly. Across the country, our offices are being requested for homeless encampment cleanup to reduce the liability on cities against injury or exposure to their employees and the community. Steri-Clean can be reached at (888) 577-7206 7 days a week.
